Care for Washington County families

Meritus Health’s latest assessment found that hospital visits for suicide or self-harm in Washington County rose almost 40% in one year, from 280 in 2023 to 391 in 2024. Families described long waitlists and trouble fitting appointments around work and child care.

Our Bethesda office is about 47–84 miles (65–100 minutes in light traffic) from Hagerstown and nearby towns, so most Washington County families see us by telehealth. Therapy and psychiatric visits, including evaluations, can happen from home.

From Hancock or Clear Spring the drive is longer, so telehealth is usually the better fit. You can change between video and in-person visits as your schedule changes.

Questions from Washington County

My toddler isn’t talking yet. Where do we start in Washington County?

For children under 3, call the Infants & Toddlers Program at 301-766-8217 or refer online at referral.mditp.org. For ages 3 and up, call Washington County Public Schools Child Find at 301-766-8509. Both are free.

Will Child Find tell us whether our child has autism?

Not as a diagnosis. Child Find looks at whether your child is eligible for school services. If your insurance, such as TRICARE’s autism program, needs a medical diagnosis, that comes from a clinical evaluation. Blue Sails offers autism evaluations.

Do we have to drive to an office from Washington County?

Not usually. Our Bethesda office is the closest, about 47–84 miles (65–100 minutes in light traffic). Therapy and psychiatric visits, including evaluations, can be done by telehealth.

Where can a veteran in Washington County get mental health care?

In Washington County, VA care includes the Hagerstown VA Clinic, 1101 Opal Ct, Suite 202 (VA Martinsburg Health Care); Martinsburg VA Medical Center is across the line in West Virginia. Blue Sails offers therapy and psychiatric care for veterans and military families. If you get your care through VA, ask your VA care team what options you have, and call us to talk through yours.

Who can help right away during a crisis in Washington County?

Call or text 988, or call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room in an emergency. 988 is available at any hour and connects to local crisis services; veterans and service members can press 1.

What does Blue Sails help with?

Blue Sails provides outpatient therapy for adults, teens, children and couples, with trauma-focused options such as EMDR, plus psychiatric medication management for children and adults. For autism, we offer autism evaluations and an autism early intervention day program for ages 2 to 6 (ask about availability). We care for veterans and military families, and Blue Sails accepts TRICARE.
