Getting care up and down the peninsula

Calvert County runs about 35 miles from Dunkirk to Solomons along MD 2/4, and there is no VA clinic in the county. The average commute here is about 39 minutes. From Solomons, our Lusby office is about 10 minutes away. From Chesapeake Beach or Dunkirk it’s about 45 minutes to an hour, so telehealth can save northern Calvert families the drive. Therapy and psychiatric visits, including evaluations, can be done by telehealth.

In 2026 the federal government listed all of Calvert County as a high-need mental health professional shortage area. The county has about 398 residents for every mental health clinician, compared with about 273 statewide (County Health Rankings 2025). If you’ve been waiting for an appointment, you’re not alone.

For families of young children

If your child is under 3 and you’re worried about speech, play or development, the Calvert County Infants and Toddlers Program at Calvert County Public Schools is free, and anyone can make a referral. From age 3, CCPS Child Find screens and evaluates preschoolers for special education. Both start with one number: 443-550-8405.

School services and a medical diagnosis are separate. An IEP doesn’t diagnose autism, and some insurance plans, including TRICARE’s autism program, need a formal diagnosis first. Blue Sails offers autism evaluations, and you can start a medical evaluation while your child’s school evaluation is underway.

Questions from Calvert County

My toddler isn’t talking yet. Who do I call first?

For children under 3, call the Calvert County Infants and Toddlers Program at 443-550-8405 or refer online at referral.mditp.org. It’s free, and anyone can make the referral. If you also want a medical autism evaluation, you can ask for one at the same time. Blue Sails offers autism evaluations.

My child already has an IEP. Why would we need an autism evaluation too?

An IEP shows your child qualifies for special education at school. It isn’t a medical diagnosis. Some autism services, including TRICARE’s autism program, require a formal diagnosis, and TRICARE sets its own rules for who can provide it. Blue Sails offers autism evaluations.

We’re a Pax River family on TRICARE. What should we do before starting autism care?

TRICARE’s autism program needs a confirmed diagnosis and approval before ABA starts. Children of active-duty members also need to be enrolled in EFMP. The Fleet and Family Support Center at Pax River (301-342-4911) can help with EFMP. Blue Sails accepts TRICARE. Call us and we’ll check your coverage with you.

I’m a veteran in Calvert County. Where is the nearest VA care?

There’s no VA clinic in Calvert County. The closest are the Lexington Park and Charlotte Hall VA clinics in St. Mary’s County. Blue Sails offers therapy and psychiatric care for veterans and military families. If you get your care through VA, ask your VA care team what options you have, and call us to talk through yours.

Can my teen see a psychiatric provider without the drive to Lusby?

Yes. Psychiatric visits, including evaluations and medication follow-ups, can be done by telehealth. That helps families in Dunkirk, Owings and the beaches, where Lusby is about 45 minutes to an hour away.

Who do I call in a mental health crisis in Calvert County?

Call 911 in an emergency. For urgent mental health or substance use help, call Calvert Crisis Response 24/7 at 1-877-467-5628, or call or text 988. Veterans can press 1.
