Ask intake about clinician fit, current availability, benefits and any referral requirements.

Care that starts with understanding you

Choose the pathway that feels closest to your needs. If more than one fits, intake can help you decide where to begin.

Behavioral health care at a glance

Most people begin with outpatient care. The right starting point depends on your age, your situation and how much support you need right now.

  • Outpatient therapy

Individual, family, teen and group counseling using CBT, DBT and other evidence-based approaches, in person or by telehealth.

  • Psychiatry and medication management

Psychiatric evaluations, medication management and ongoing monitoring for children, teens and adults.

  • Autism services

Evaluations with a PsyD clinician and an early-intervention autism program for children ages 2–6, with BCBA-led ABA planning.

  • Crisis support, 24/7

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by call, text or chat, plus mobile crisis response where available. If you or someone you love is in immediate danger, call 911, go to the nearest ER, or call or text 988.

Choosing a level of care

  • Outpatient therapy

Scheduled counseling sessions, usually weekly, in person or by telehealth. Often a fit when symptoms are manageable day to day and you can keep regular routines.

  • Outpatient psychiatry

Evaluation, prescribing and monitoring alongside or instead of therapy, for mood, anxiety, attention or other concerns that may respond to medication and follow-up.

  • Intensive outpatient (IOP)

Structured daytime treatment several days a week while living at home. Consider it when weekly visits are not enough support but overnight care is not needed for safety.

  • Inpatient or residential care

Overnight, licensed treatment with staff on site around the clock, for safety concerns or symptoms that cannot be managed at home. Blue Sails provides outpatient care; intake can help you think through other levels.

How to start: intake in four steps

  • 1. Tell us what is going on

Note symptoms, medications, health history and any safety concerns so the team can prepare.

  • 2. Complete intake

Start your client intake and we will help match you with a licensed provider.

  • 3. Meet your clinician

Your clinician reviews your concerns, how long they have lasted and how they affect daily life, then explains options such as therapy, medication or both.

  • 4. Keep the plan current

Goals are revisited as needs change. With your permission, care can be coordinated with schools, primary care and other providers.

Crisis support

If you or someone you love is in immediate danger, call 911, go to the nearest ER, or call or text 988. For a mental health or substance-use crisis, you can call, text or chat 988 for free, confidential support 24/7. Mobile crisis response is available across Maryland, though hours vary by county.

Questions before you begin

Short answers to common questions about starting care.

How do I find a behavioral health provider in Maryland?

Start with your insurance card and ZIP code. Search your plan’s directory, or use Maryland 211 to find local behavioral health resources. To start with Blue Sails, complete our client intake and we will help match you with a licensed provider in person or by telehealth. Confirm the clinician and new-patient availability before scheduling.

What is the difference between outpatient, intensive outpatient and inpatient care?

Outpatient therapy is scheduled counseling, usually weekly. An intensive outpatient program is structured daytime treatment several days a week while you live at home. Inpatient or residential care is overnight licensed treatment with staff on site around the clock. The level of care should match symptom severity and safety needs.

What should we bring to the first appointment?

Bring your insurance card and plan details, a current medication list, and any notes or records from current or past care. Complete the requested intake paperwork and write down your top concerns and questions.

How do I schedule or reschedule an appointment?

You can request an appointment online. To schedule or reschedule an existing appointment, call us at (410) 231-0488.

Can telehealth work if I don’t have a smartphone?

Call us at (410) 231-0488 before scheduling to talk through the device options that work for your telehealth visit.
